As per the official NID Admissions Handbook 2025–26, the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) program comprises two stages:admissions.nid.edu+5admissions.nid.edu+5admissions.nid.edu+5
📝 Stage 1: DAT Prelims
The DAT Prelims is a pen-and-paper test designed to evaluate candidates’ design aptitude. It includes both objective and subjective questions that assess:
Knowledge and Comprehension: Understanding of design-related concepts.
Analysis and Creativity: Ability to analyze situations and think creatively.
Visual and Communication Skills: Proficiency in visualizing and communicating ideas effectively.
The test duration is typically 3 hours. Candidates are assessed on their ability to apply these skills in various contexts.Kollegeapply+1PW Live+1Shiksha
🎨 Stage 2: DAT Mains
Candidates shortlisted from the DAT Prelims are invited to participate in the DAT Mains, which focuses on practical skills and includes:admissions.nid.edu
Studio Test: Hands-on exercises such as model making, material manipulation, and other practical design tasks.
Portfolio Submission: Presentation of a portfolio showcasing the candidate’s previous work and projects.
Personal Interview: An interview to assess the candidate’s motivation, design thinking, and suitability for the program.
The DAT Mains evaluates the candidate’s practical abilities and readiness for a design education.
Selection for admission to the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programs at NID is based on candidates’ performance at two stages of the Design Aptitude Test (DAT):
1. DAT Prelims
Purpose: Screening stage to shortlist candidates for the second stage.
Type: Pen-and-paper based test.
Evaluation Focus:
Knowledge
Analysis
Creativity
Visual and Communication Skills
Shortlisting: Candidates scoring above the minimum prescribed marks (cut-off) qualify for the DAT Mains.
2. DAT Mains
Purpose: Final evaluation to select candidates for admission.
Components:
Studio Test: Practical exercises like material handling, model making, visual problem solving.
- Portfolio Submission: Candidates must showcase their previous creative works.
- Personal Interview: Evaluation of motivation, design thinking, and aptitude for design education.
- Weightage:
DAT Prelims and DAT Mains marks are combined with specific weightage (announced by NID every year).
For B.Des 2024–25 admission, the weightage was typically 30% Prelims + 70% Mains (please cross-verify for 2025 final rules).
3. Final Merit List
Based on aggregated scores of DAT Prelims and DAT Mains (after applying respective weightages).
Only candidates who appear in both stages are considered for the final merit list.
The final merit list is category-wise: General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, and PwD.
📌 Important Points:
Merely appearing in DAT Prelims or DAT Mains does not guarantee admission.
Minimum qualifying criteria must be met in both stages.
Separate merit lists are prepared for each category.
Final admission depends on seat availability in each discipline at each NID campus.
